For 2026 the categories are French-language proficiency, health care and social services, STEM, trades, education, transport, physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience, and skilled military recruits.
What’s usually involved
- Work out which program you may qualify for, based on your work experience, its skill level, language results and education.
- Take an approved language test, and get an educational credential assessment if needed.
- Create an Express Entry profile, or apply to the provincial stream.
- If invited, submit the full application within the deadline, with all supporting documents.
- Give biometrics, complete a medical exam and provide police certificates.
- If approved, you confirm your permanent residence.
Documents you’ll typically need
Timing
Timing depends on the program, when you are invited, and how complete your application is. Check IRCC’s processing times page. Keep your temporary status valid while you wait.
Common pitfalls
- Reference letters that do not describe your duties in enough detail
- Counting work experience that does not qualify, such as some self-employment or work while studying full time
- Language results that expire before you apply
- Letting your work permit expire while waiting for an invitation
- Answers in your profile that do not match your documents
This is general information, not legal advice about your situation.
