My PR application is in trouble: A family member sponsoring me

Routes people usually look at

  1. 1

Spousal, common-law or conjugal partner sponsorship

If your partner is a citizen or permanent resident.
  2. 2

    Dependent child sponsorship

If you are the child of a citizen or permanent resident and meet the age and dependency rules.
  3. 3

    Parent and grandparent sponsorship

Which has been paused for new intake since July 15, 2026. As of October 2026, IRCC has not announced a reopening.
  4. 4

    Other relatives

    Only in limited cases.
What’s usually involved
  1. Confirm your family member is eligible to sponsor.
  2. Confirm your relationship fits a sponsorship category.
  3. Gather proof of the relationship and complete the forms together.
  4. Submit, then give biometrics, complete a medical exam and provide police certificates.

Timing

Timing depends on the category and the country you live in. Check IRCC’s processing times page.

Common pitfalls
  • Assuming any relative can sponsor you. The categories are narrow
  • A sponsor who is not eligible because of a past default or certain convictions
  • Not declaring all family members, which can prevent them being sponsored later
