Sponsor my parents or grandparents: For them to live here permanently
Routes people usually look at
1
The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
On July 15, 2026, IRCC paused new intake under the PGP until further notice. It is not inviting new sponsors to apply, and has not said when it will reopen. Existing applications continue to be processed. As of October 2026, IRCC has not announced a reopening.2
The super visa
As a way for parents and grandparents to spend long periods with the family while the PGP is paused.3
Other routes in limited cases
Some parents may qualify on their own, for example through work, or through a humanitarian and compassionate application where the facts support it. These depend heavily on the individual situation.
What’s usually involved
- Look at whether the super visa meets the family’s needs for now.
- If the PGP reopens, prepare to submit an interest to sponsor form during the intake period, if IRCC uses one.
- In the meantime, keep records that would support a future sponsorship: income documents for the required years, and proof of the relationship.
- Ask about any other route that may apply to your parent’s situation.
Documents you’ll typically need
Timing
The PGP has no open intake at present. For applications already in process, and for the super visa, check IRCC’s processing times page.
Common pitfalls
- Paying anyone who claims they can get you into a PGP intake that is closed
- Not keeping the income records a future sponsorship would need
- Assuming a humanitarian application is a substitute for sponsorship. It is a different test, with no guarantee of approval
