Sponsor my spouse or partner: Outside Canada

Routes people usually look at

  1. 1

Spousal, common-law or conjugal partner sponsorship (family class)

You sponsor your partner for permanent residence while they live outside Canada.
  2. 2

    A visitor visa

For your partner to visit while the sponsorship is in process. This is a separate application, and an officer may look closely at whether the visit is temporary.
What’s usually involved
  1. Confirm you can sponsor. You must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident living in Canada, or a person registered under the Indian Act, and at least 18. A citizen living abroad must show they will live in Canada once the partner becomes a permanent resident.
  2. Confirm the relationship fits one of the three categories: married spouse, common-law partner (living together for at least 12 months), or conjugal partner (an exceptional category for couples who could not live together or marry).
  3. Gather proof that the relationship is real and continuing.
  4. Complete the sponsorship and permanent residence forms together, pay the government fees, and submit online.
  5. Your partner gives biometrics, completes a medical exam and provides police certificates when asked.
  6. IRCC may ask for more documents or invite you to an interview.
  7. If approved, your partner receives confirmation of permanent residence and lands in Canada.
Documents you’ll typically need
Timing

Timing depends on the country where your partner lives, how complete the application is, background and medical checks, and whether an interview is needed. IRCC publishes current estimates on its processing times page.

Common pitfalls
  • Not enough evidence that the relationship is real, especially for a short relationship or an arranged marriage with little contact history
  • Answers in the forms that do not match each other, or do not match earlier applications
  • A sponsor who is not eligible, for example because of a previous sponsorship default or certain criminal convictions
  • Missing police certificates or untranslated documents
  • Assuming a visitor visa will be approved while a sponsorship is pending
